Palatka is the Putnam County seat, sitting directly on the St. Johns River — one of the few north-flowing rivers in the world — about 50 miles south of Jacksonville. Known historically as a river port and winter resort, it carries Victorian-era architecture and a more commercial, institutional character than the smaller satellite towns around it.
